COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Rovel Hamilton of Melbourne, Fla., Wednesday signed a national letter of intent to attend the University of Maryland, head coach Ron Vanderlinden announced.
Hamilton, a 6-1, 180-pound defensive back, was an all-region selection by SuperPrep as a senior. He totaled two interceptions and 45 tackles on defense in addition to passing for more than 600 yards and rushing for more than 500 yards as his team's quarterback. He totaled 12 interceptions during his career.
Hamilton was named first team All-Space Coast and third team all-state in 1999. He also was named to the Golden Helmet team recognizing the top players in Central Florida.
"Rovel is the cornerback we've been hoping for, and he is a big part of a recruiting class in which we have met all of our needs," said Vanderlinden. "We expect Rovel and Dennard Wilson [DeMatha High School] to contribute in our secondary this fall."
The signing of Hamilton brings to 24 the number of players who have signed national letters of intent with the Terps during the 2000 signing period. Hamilton joins 23 other signees announced last Wednesday.
