Edell Seeks 150th Win At Maryland As No. 9 Terps Host Towson

March 10, 2000

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - One of the state's top rivalries will be renewed on Saturday afternoon as the No. 9 Maryland Terrapins welcome Towson to Byrd Stadium for a 1 p.m. face-off. The Terps (2-1) are coming into the game fresh off a strong defensive outing in which they topped Bucknell 9-3 last Tuesday at Byrd. Towson is 0-1 after dropping its season opener to Lehigh, 10-9 on Saturday, March 4. The loss was Towson's first to Lehigh in the nine-game series.

Saturday's game with Towson could also serve as the backdrop for yet another milestone for Maryland head coach Dick Edell, who is a member of the Towson Athletic Hall of Fame (Class of `67). With a win over Towson, Edell would record his 150th win at Maryland, dating back to the start of his tenure in 1984.

Edell, who is the all-time winningest coach in ACC history, would become the first coach in the conference to pass the 150-win plateau. With an overall record of 260-116, Edell is closing in on former Towson coach Carl Runk (262-161) for fourth on the all-time collegiate lacrosse victory chart.

Series History With Towson

In games against Towson, Maryland holds a 16-4 all-time record in the series that dates to 1971. The Terps have won the last five meetings, including a 15-11 last season at Minnegan Stadium on May 5, 1999. That game was postponed from the original date of March 14, 1999, due to snow. The postponement marked the third time since 1993 that the Terps and Towson had to reschedule a game due to poor weather conditions.

In the last Byrd Stadium meeting, Maryland topped the Tigers, 17-6 on March 7, 1998. Overall in the decade of the 1990s, Maryland won seven of the 11 meetings. Towson has never beaten Maryland at home though, winning three times in College Park: March 12, 1994 - Towson, 14-7, March 14, 1992 - Towson, 13-9 and March 17, 1990, Towson, 8-7. The Tigers also topped Maryland in the teams' only NCAA Tournament matchup, 15-11 in the NCAA Semifinal at Syracuse on May 25, 1991.

Edell Vs. Seaman

Dick Edell and Tony Seaman have coached against each other 14 previous times, spanning Edell's tenure at Army and Maryland and Seaman's stints at C.W. Post, Penn, Johns Hopkins and Towson. In those match-ups, Edell's teams have an 8-6 record. They first faced each other in 1982 when Edell's Army Cadets defeated Seaman and C.W. Post, 15-4.

While Seaman was at Penn, Maryland topped the Quakers in the 1987 NCAA Quarterfinals, 12-8. During Seaman's time at Hopkins (1991-98), the Jays defeated Maryland in six of the 11 meetings -- three of which were NCAA Tournament games. Edell won the first against Seaman as the coach of Towson in 1999.

Head Coach Dick Edell

Maryland's Dick Edell (Towson `67), is in his 28th season of coaching and 17th season at Maryland as one of the all-time coaching greats of the game.

After compiling a 9-5 record in 1999, Edell has the best career ACC record with a 149-69 (.683), all at Maryland.

With a lifetime record of 260-116 (.691) over 28 years following stints at the University of Baltimore, Army and Maryland, Edell is the nation's second-winningest active coach. Ironically, the only coach Edell trails on the active list is Jack Emmer (274-147), who succeeded Edell at Army in 1984.

With 260 career wins, Edell is the fifth all-time winningest coach in men's lacrosse annals. He passed former Cornell coach Richie Moran and Syracuse legend Roy Simmons, Sr. last season. The next coach on the list is former Towson coach Carl Runk (262). The all-time leader is former UMass coach Dick Garber (300 wins). "Big Man," as he is affectionately known, has led his teams to 19 NCAA Tournament appearances (15 in Division I), including 11 at Maryland. He has also led the Terps to three ACC championships and three NCAA championship game appearances. He was named the National Coach of the Year by the USILA in 1978 and 1995. Hochstadt Scores First Of Year

Sophomore Craig Hochstadt (Columbia, Md.) scored his first goal of the season against Duke to bring the Terps to within 8-7 late in the third quarter.

Hochstadt, who had three assists against Mount St. Mary's, scored one goal in his freshman campaign with the Terps, when he scored against Dartmouth on March 23, 1999.

LaChapelle Likes Facing Duke

Marcus LaChapelle has enjoyed his last two games against Duke when it comes to scoring, after tying his career high with three goals and adding an assist against the Blue Devils last Saturday. In his last two games against Duke, LaChapelle has four goals and five assists for nine points.

McGinnis Makes Pair Of Debuts

Junior goalie Pat McGinnis made his first career start in goal in the Terps' 19-3 win over Mount St. Mary's. McGinnis had a strong debut allowing just one goal and making 10 saves in 45 minutes of action. His saves mark and minutes played mark both eclipsed his previous career bests of five saves and 15 minutes played.

He made his first career ACC start against Duke on March 4, stopping nine shots.

Starting Debuts

Pat McGinnis was one of three Terps to make their starting debut against Mount St. Mary's. Joining the goalie were freshman attackman Mike Mollot and junior defenseman David Rose (Lutherville, Md.).

Freshman defenseman Michael Howley (Wantagh, N.Y.) made his first career start against Duke.

Sophomore Brian Carroll (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) mad his starting debut as the face-off man against Bucknell.

Defense Doing The Job

In holding Mount St. Mary's to just three goals in the season opener, the Terps posted their best defensive effort since allowing just two goals to Radford in a 21-2 rout on April 1, 1997.

Maryland held the Mountaineers scoreless for the first 24:54 of the season opener. Dating back to last season's finale against UMBC, Maryland had held its opponent scoreless for nearly 60 minutes. The Retrievers were held without a goal in the entire second half and scored their seventh and final goal of that game on May 8, 1999 with 3:26 left in the first half.

Overall, Maryland did not allow a goal for 58:20 spanning the two games over two seasons.

Career-Highs Set

In the romp over Mount St. Mary's, several Terps set career highs in offensive statistics, led by Andrew Combs, who broke his career high for total points with five (previously three vs. Towson on March 7, 1998) and assists with three (previously one set on seven occasions).

Mike Morsell (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) recorded his first multi-goal game with a natural hat trick in the fourth quarter. He surpassed his entire career-goal total of two, set in his freshman year of 1999.

Craig Hochstadt recorded his first career assists with three against the Mountaineers. That also set his high for points in a game.

Scoring Initiation

Six different Terp freshman scored their first collegiate goals against Mount St. Mary's led by Mike Mollot, who tallied twice. Willy Passavia, Chris Edwards (Baltimore, Md.), Brett Harper (Upper Arlington, Ohio), Sean Leary (Troy, Mich.) and Ricky Sears (Chevy Chase, Md.) also scored in their initial college games.

Freshman Jamie Daue (Lutherville, Md.) recorded his first point on an assist to Leary in the fourth.

No. 5 Duke 9, No. 8 Maryland 8

DURHAM, N.C. -- Senior attackmen T.J. Durnan and Jared Frood combined for five goals, including the game-winner with 1:58 left in regulation, as the fifth-ranked Blue Devils (3-0) defeated No. 8 Maryland, 9-8, in ACC men's lacrosse action at Duke's Koskinen Stadium.

The Blue Devils took charge early, building a 3-1 lead in the first quarter. Duke's first goal came on an extra-man opportunity, as Durnan fed Frood for the score. Sophomore Greg Patchak and senior Craig Schubert also added goals for the Blue Devils as Maryland's Mike LaMonica scored the only Terp goal of the first period.

Frood added an unassisted goal early in the second quarter, bringing the Duke lead to 4-1. Then the Terrapin floodgates opened, as Maryland scored five goals in a six-minute period to go up 6-4. Terp attackman Marcus LaChapelle led the way during the scoring spree with three goals (two unassisted) and an assist. Maryland also got goals from Mike Morsell and Chris Malone. LaChapelle's goal output (three) equalled his career high in a single game.

Duke stopped the bleeding before the half, as Durnan and Patchak scored two quick goals with under a minute to play to tie the score at six at halftime. Patchak's came with 0:03 left in the half.

The Blue Devils hung on to that momentum in the third quarter, scoring the first two goals to go up, 8-6. Maryland's Craig Hochstadt then scored on an extra-man opportunity and Malone added another to even the score again at eight.

The teams remained tied for the first 13 minutes of the final period, until the Durnan-Frood combination struck again. This time Frood fed Durnan for the score and the 9-8 lead. Duke won the following face-off, but wasn't able to hold on to the ball for the remainder of the game. Maryland gained possession with nearly a half-minute remaining, but was a man-down due to a slashing penalty. The Duke defense prevented the Terps from getting a clean shot off, as the Blue Devils notched the victory .

Duke goalkeeper Matt Breslin tallied 13 saves in the victory, as Terrapin goalie Pat McGinnis recorded nine. Maryland had 31 shots to Duke's 26, while the teams were nearly even in ground balls (Duke 36, Maryland 38) and face-offs (Maryland 9/20, Duke 11/20).

Duke has won the six of the last 10 meetings in this storied series, but Saturday's victory marked Duke's first home win over Maryland since the 1954 season.
