The Last Cornell-Maryland Game
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 7 Maryland men's lacrosse team busted out
to a 7-0 first quarter lead and never looked back as the Terps recorded
an 11-6 win over No. 13 Cornell at Byrd Stadium before 3,538 on March
20, 1999. Maryland's scoring came at a fast pace to open the game as the
Terps (4-1) were up 3-0 just 3:36 into the game after a goal by senior
Scott Hochstadt, and a pair from junior Brian Zeller.
Both Zeller and Hochstadt finished the day with three goals. Hochstadt
continued to write his name into the Maryland record book as he scored
his 100th career goal to close the first-quarter onslaught with four
seconds left.
Two Terps scored their first college goals. Junior defenseman Jason
Carrier and freshman attacker Nate Watkins got into the scoring column
for the first time for Maryland. Sophomore attacker Andrew "Buggs" Combs
added a pair of goals in the win and attacker Marcus LaChapelle added
two more assists to raise his team-high total to 13.
Cornell (2-2) played a strong game in the second and third quarters,
outscoring Maryland 5-1 over the periods and cut the Terps' lead to 8-5
with 5:32 left in the third quarter on a goal by Andrew Schardt.
Attacker Josh Morgan scored two goals in the second quarter, when the
Big Red outscored Maryland 3-1.

and has three career points. Both Jason Carrier and Nate Watkins scored
their first career goals against Cornell in the 1999 meeting.
Terp Statistics vs. Cornell (Goals-Asst-Pts.)
Facing A Familiar Face
Maryland will see former backup goalie Jarrod Norkus on the opposing
sidelines in a Cornell uniform. Norkus spent two seasons with the Terps
and played in three games. His most extensive time came against Cornell
last season when he made five saves in three minutes.
McGinnis Making Many Saves
Junior Pat McGinnis has been outstanding in his first season as the
Terps' starting goalie. In five games, McGinnis has a sensational 6.09
goals against average and a .711 save percentage. He has allowed just 28
goals. He allowed three goals or less for the third time in five
appearances this season in the win over Delaware.
McGinnis also gave up three goals to Bucknell on March 7 and allowed
just one goal in 45 minutes in his career-starting debut against Mount
St. Mary's.
Mollot Makes Mark
Redshirt freshman Mike Mollot stands atop the Maryland scoring chart
after five college games. The preseason honorable mention All-American
attackman leads the Terps in points with 19 and assists with 13.
He has recorded at least three points in four of five games with the
Terps including a career-high six points (one goal and five assists)
against Towson. In Maryland's last game, he scored two goals.
He had one goal and three assists against Bucknell, three assists
against Duke and two goals and two assists in the opener against Mount
St. Mary's.
At his current rate, Mollot will surpass last season's leader in
assists (Marcus LaChapelle with 18) in the next two games.
Mollot's Assists Most In Two Yrs.
Mike Mollot's single-game assist total of five against Towson was the
most by a Maryland player since Andrew Whipple had five against Loyola
on May 25, 1998 in the NCAA semifinals.
Last season, the most assists in a game was four, accomplished by
Marcus LaChapelle against Duke on March 7, 1999
LaChapelle Leads In Goals
Marcus LaChapelle stands atop the Terps' goal scoring chart with 10
after netting a goal for the fifth straight game against Delaware.
Along with Mike LaMonica, LaChapelle is the only other Terrapin to
score in every game this season.
He has three straight multi-goal games, recording hat tricks against
Duke and Bucknell. Those three-goal performances tie his single-game
career high, which was established against North Carolina on March 27,
1999.
LaMonica Sets Career Highs
Mike LaMonica set his single-game career highs of four goals and four
points against Towson. All four goals came in the first half.
The star performance was especially sweet for LaMonica, who's mother
Lynda Filbert is a gymnastics coach for the Tigers.
Updating Scoring Streaks
Dating back to last season, three players have point-scoring streaks
spanning at least six games led by Chris Malone, who has scored in nine
straight games (9 goals, 9 assists, 18 points).

LaMonica has scored at least one goal in each of his last seven games
(13-0-13) dating to the 1999 season.

three assists against Delaware and leads all active Terps in career
scoring with 86 points on 59 goals and 27 assists.
He is 43 points from cracking the all-time Top 20 in career scoring.
Pat O'Meally (1971-74) stands 20th with 129 points.

this season. The unit has scored three goals in each of the Terps' last
two games. Against Towson Brian Zeller, Mike LaMonica and Chris Malone

netted two goals and Andrew Combs scored his second man-up goal of the
season.
LaMonica leads the Terps in man-up goals with four.
Overall, Maryland has 11 extra-man goals on 24 opportunities, a 45.8
percentage.

this season. They have killed off 19 of 22 penalties without allowing a
goal. Opponents have scored on just 13.6 percent of their extra-man
chances.

In his first season as a primary face-off man, Jeff Shirk has been
strong on face-offs all season. He has won 50 percent or more his
face-offs in every game, following a five-for-nine showing against
Delaware.
Overall, Shirk has won 25 of 43 face-offs, 58.1 percent of his draws.
Morsell Passes Career Marks
Mike Morsell has emerged as a weapon for the Terps, scoring the
game-winner against Towson. With six goals for six points this season,
the sophomore has already passed last season's totals of two goals and
three points.
Morsell is also the Terps most accurate shooter, scoring in 53.8
percent (7/13) of his shots. He is followed by Scott Hochstadt (50.0)
and Marcus LaChapelle, who has scored on 45.5 percent of his shots.
Hochstadt Scores Again
Sophomore Craig Hochstadt scored in back-to-back games for the first
time in his career after scoring late in the second quarter against
Delaware to make the score 9-2.
His second goal of the season came against Towson to tie the game at
6-6 in the second quarter. He had scored his first goal of the season
against Duke to bring the Terps to within 8-7 late in the third quarter.
Hochstadt, who had three assists against Mount St. Mary's, scored one
goal in his freshman campaign with the Terps, when he scored against
Dartmouth on March 23, 1999.
Burnham Nets First In Two Yrs.
Defensive midfielder Geoff Burnham scored on a full-field rush after
Carrington King won a face-off in the fourth quarter. It was Burnham's
second-career goal. He scored his first career goal in an NCAA First
Round game against Butler on May 10, 1998.
Burnham leads all Maryland field players in groundballs with 29. Only
goalie Pat McGinnis has more groundballs with 34. Burnham has scooped at
least four groundballs in each game this season and has 12 over the last
two games.
