ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Maryland's four sophomore wrestlers all fell short this afternoon at the NCAA Wrestling Championships in the Kiel Center.
At 133 pounds, two-time ACC champion Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.) was placed in one of the toughest brackets and lost by major decision to No. 8 seed Paris Ruiz of Fresno State, 12-2. At 141, Mark Mansueto (West Chester, Pa.) lost by major decision to Wisconsin's Grant Hoerr, 10-2. At 157, Rob Booth (Atco, N.J.) lost to Bloomsburg's Ed Hockenberry, the No. 9 seed, by major decision, 12-4. Josh Weidman (Hershey, Pa.), at 165, was given a pigtail match for the first round and then was pitted against Iowa's Matt Anderson. Anderson won the match by technical fall, 26-10, while time expired as Weidman was attempting to earn points.
Four NCAA qualifiers is the largest Maryland group since All-American Jim Guzzio led the Terps to a 29th place finish nationally with five qualifiers in 1997. Guzzio, who had a 39-2 record, including a school-record 38 straight wins, finished fifth in the nation.
All four will compete in the wrestleback bracket beginning at 7:30 p.m EST.
