
Clemson Beats Maryland 8-6 In Baseball

Clemson, S.C. - Michael Johnson went 2-for-3 with a triple, a home run and five RBI, leading No. 4 Clemson (17-3, 1-0 ACC) to an 8-6 win over Maryland (5-12, 0-1 ACC) in ACC baseball action on Friday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The game marked the first of a three-game ACC series between the two teams.
Matt Swope got the Terps on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when he singled, stole second and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chuck Easter.
Clemson blew the game open with five runs in the bottom of the third inning. Johnson launched a bases-loaded triple to put Clemson up 3-1. Jarrod Schmidt and Ryan Riley then each drilled a RBI double as the Tigers ended the inning up 5-1.
Craig Munroe pulled the Terps to within 5-2 in the top of the fourth inning when he doubled and later scored on a ground out by Daryl Whitmer.
Johnson struck again in the bottom of the seventh inning, drilling a two-run home run to right field. His blast was part of a three-run inning, which extended the Clemson lead to 8-2.
The Terps fought back, scoring four times in the top of the ninth inning. With the bases loaded, Frank Valois singled home a run, Steve Oursler followed with a two-run single. Valois then scored on a ground out by Sean Lomas. The Tigers, however, held Maryland scoreless the rest of the way.
Scott Berney got the win for Clemson to raise his record to 6-0. Jamie Hammond (2-4) took the loss for the Terps.
Munroe and Oursler each had two hits for the Terps.
The Terps and Tigers square off again on Saturday at 2 p.m.
