Lewis And Ward Earn District II First-Team Academic Honors

College Park, Md.- - Maryland men's soccer player Christian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.) and Terrapin men's swimmer Jason Ward (Midlothian, Va.) have both been named to the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-District II Team. The 1999-2000 selection to the All-District At-Large team was the second for Lewis, and the first for Ward.
The All-District team was selected by district by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America. The ten honorees from District II will represent the district on the GTE Academic All-American ballot for the national team, which will be announced on Tuesday, April 18.
A junior, Lewis has been the Terrapin's starting goalie for the past two years. The 1999 season marked another great year for the Terps, who reached the NCAA tournament for the sixth-straight time and racked-up 14 regular-season wins, the most in Maryland history. Lewis started 15 of the Terps' 20 games, despite a bulging disc problem that relegated the junior to the sidelines for five of Maryland's games last fall. After returning against Clemson on Oct. 30 and leading the Terps to their first win at Historic Riggs Field since 1988, Lewis finished the season with a 0.97 goals against average and a .764 save percentage. He recorded seven shutouts for the second consecutive season, and underwent successful back surgery over winter break. Lewis is a marketing major with a 3.75 cumulative GPA.
Ward, a senior on Maryland's men's swimming and diving team, received his first GTE All-District nod. A Virginia native, Ward finished in a time of 54.96 in the 100 breast and was sixth in the 200 breast (2:01.71) at the 2000 ACC championships in Chapel Hill on Feb. 24-26. He also qualified to go to the NCAA championships, being held this weekend at the University of Minnesota. An All-ACC pick, Ward is the sole representative from Maryland at the NCAA championships. Earlier this season, he also finished third in the 50 breast at the FINA World Cup Championships in a time of 28.34. Ward is a chemical engineering major and carries a 3.864 GPA.
