Terrapins Blank Patriots In Doubleheader Sweep

April 20, 2000

FAIRFAX, Va. - The Terrapin pitching trio of junior Jen Shellhammer (Slatington, Pa.) and sophomores Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Danielle Carpenter (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) turned in brilliant performances, including the Terps' first no-hitter of the 2000 season, as the Maryland softball team (25-22, 3-3 ACC/SASA) rolled over George Mason, 2-0 and 2-0. As a unit, the pitching staff combined for 14 innings of shutout softball allowing only three hits and striking out eight.

Right-handers Bettker and Shellhammer combined for the no-hitter in Game 1, allowing only two Patriots to reach base in the entire contest. Bettker pitched four innings, fanning two while giving up only a walk. Shellhammer took the reigns in the fifth to collect the victory, striking out a pair and walking one as well. The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when senior Cortney Madea (Northampton, Pa.) stepped in and launched a towering, 2-RBI double to right-center, scoring junior Annmarie Browne (Lansdale, Pa.) and sophomore Beth Radford (Dunkirk, Md.). Those runs were all the Terps would need, collecting their first no-hit victory since a 7-0 drubbing of Georgia Tech during last season's ACC Tournament.

Shellhammer got the start in Game 2, whiffing a batter and scattering three hits through three innings. Southpaw Carpenter then took over and threw a perfect four final innings, retiring all 12 batters faced while adding two strikeouts in the win. Browne sparked the Terp sixth once again, reaching on a George Mason error and advancing to second on a Jennifer Potzman (Trexlertown, Pa.) sac bunt. The junior sped home as Radford smacked a single to center. A Kiesha Pickeral (Hughesville, Md.) single down the right field line set the stage for freshman Jillian Callaway (Brandywine, Md.), who ripped a seeing-eye single through the left side to score Radford.

Callaway and Pickeral had three hits on the day for the Terps, while Potzman, Radford, and junior Michelle Burrell (Owego, N.Y.) chipped in with two hits apiece.

The Terps are next in action on Saturday, Apr. 22 when they host a doubleheader against ACC rival Virginia at 1 p.m.
