Maryland sophomore Laura Moon (Scottsdale, Ariz.) has qualified as an individual all-around competitor for the NCAA Championships on April 11-15. This will be Moon's second consecutive year going to the nationals as an all-around competitor. Moon enters the meet as 10th of the 12 gymnasts who qualified for the all-around competition.
Saturday evening at the Southeast Region Championships in Athens, Ga., Moon placed third in the all-around with a 39.075. Moon also placed second on beam with a 9.875. Prior to the regional meet, Moon was ranked No. 19 nationally for the all-around and No. 9 on beam.
Moon is currently averaging a 38.930 in the all-around and scored a career high of 39.500 in Maryland's final two home meets of the 2000 season. That score is the second-highest all-around score in school history. Moon, along with sophomore Gillian Cote (Fredericksburg, Va.) holds the Terps' season high on beam with a 9.925. Both also hold the all-time high score on the uneven bars with a 9.925.
Also this season, Moon earned recognition as one of the top performers in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL). She made All-EAGL second team for vault and bars and All-EAGL first team for beam and all-around.
Terrapins Place Fourth At Regionals
Sophomore Laura Moon (Scottsdale, Ariz.) placed third in the all-around with a 39.075 as the No. 17 Maryland women's gymnastics team earned a 193.775 to place fourth at the 2000 Southeast Region Championships on Saturday, April 1. No. 3 Georgia earned first place with a 196.725, followed by No. 11 Brigham Young with a 194.700. Both Georgia and Brigham Young advanced to the NCAA Championships which will be held in Boise, Idaho on April 11-15. No. 23 Towson placed third with a 194.325 and No. 13 NC State and George Washington rounded out the team scoring placing fifth and sixth with scores of 193.475 and 191.650, respectively. Despite placing fourth, the Terps won beam with a 48.750 and tied with Brigham Young for second on bars with a 48.650. Maryland concludes the season 19-12 overall with a .613 winning percentage.
Moon Leads Individuals At Southeast Region Meet
Sophomore Laura Moon was Maryland's top performer at the Southeast Regional Championships Saturday night. In addition to placing third in the all-around with a 39.075, Moon was also the Terps' highest finisher on bars and beam and placed second on beam with a 9.875.
Sophomore Gillian Cote was also a strong performer for the Terps, earning sixth place in the all-around with a 38.925 and earning fourth place on beam with a 9.825. Cote and sophomore Lisa Mealey (Bensalem, Pa.) both placed 15th on bars with a score of 9.725.
Junior Jill Fisher (Huntington, N.Y.), who is currently No. 1 in the nation for the floor exercise earned a 9.825 on floor, placing eighth and tying for the fourth highest floor score of the evening. Fisher also earned a 9.700 on beam. Also earning a 9.700 on beam was sophomore Kit Johnson (Virginia Beach, Va.). Johnson was the Terps' highest finisher on vault with a 9.700.
Other high finishers for Maryland included Cote and Fisher placing 20th on vault with a score of 9.625, senior co-captain Rachel Dolbin (Pottsville, Pa.) placing 19th on bars with a 9.700. Cote placed 26th on floor with a 9.750, followed by Moon and co-captain Christine Holcombe (McMurray, Pa.) who both earned a 9.725.
