Junior lefthander Cory Vance allowed just three runs on six hits on the way to his second straight complete game of the season, leading Georgia Tech (24-8, 8-2 ACC) to a 7-3 win over Maryland (10-20, 0-7 ACC) in ACC baseball action on Friday at Shipley Field. The game marked the first of a three-game weekend series between the schools.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sophomore second baseman Richard Lewis scored on a ground out and junior first baseman Derik Goffena singled home Victor Menocal.
Junior left fielder Brian Patenaude cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the first inning when he scored on a wild pitch. He got on base by lining a double to center field and in the process, extending his career-high hitting streak to 13 games.
In the top of the third inning, sophomore catcher Bryan Prince drilled a two-run home run and junior left fielder Jason Basil hit a solo home run, extending the lead to 5-1. Junior right fielder Brad Stockton scored on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to put the Yellow Jackets up 6-1.
Senior first baseman Craig Munroe doubled and then scored on a single by junior designated hitter Chuck Easter to cut the Tech lead to 6-2 in the fourth inning. It was his 29th career double, moving him to 11th place on the school's all-time list.
Sophomore third baseman Mark Teixeira hit a solo run into the top of the seventh inning increasing Tech's lead to 7-2.
Munroe led off the bottom of the ninth inning with his team-leading sixth home run of the season, but Vance held on to finish off the game. Vance improved to 7-1 while senior lefthander Jamie Hammond took the loss to fall to 3-6.
Maryland and Georgia Tech continue their series on Saturday at 2 p.m. and conclude with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.
