College Park, Md.- - The Maryland men's soccer team takes on the Hershey Wildcats Friday night at 6 p.m. as the fourth game in the team's nontraditional spring schedule. The Terps' will also host the British Royal Air Force on April 20 at 6 p.m. before the spring schedule comes to a close.
The Terrapins', who finished the 1999 season with a program-record 14 regular season wins, have faced mostly professional teams this spring season, with the exception of their April 1 contest at Virginia. The Terps have yet to win a game this spring, but have been competitive throughout the tune-up season.
Despite losing forwards Taylor Twellman (St. Louis, Mo.) and Jason Cropley (La Canada, Calif.), who accounted for just less then half of the Terps' goals last season, as well as All-American defender Dan Califf (Orange, Calif.), Maryland managed a tie with D.C. United 2-2 on a late-game Sumed Ibrahim (Tamale, Ghana) goal, while notching losses to the Columbus Crew and Virginia. The Terps' turned it up in the second half of the game against the Cavaliers, with Nick Purdom (Orange, Calif.) finding the net in the second half to make it a 2-1 margin of victory for the Terps. New York native Jason Sardis (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) also scored on a penalty kick against the United to round-out the Terps' spring scoring.
Maryland has only four games remaining in its 1999 spring schedule, including an alumni game on April 22. Returning Terp alumns include Matt Assia, Nigel Burdett, Bob Dass, Dave Deihl, Ed Gauss, Malcolm Gillian, Eric Packheiser, Morry Steinbich, Dave Ungrady, Sean Wray and 1999 graduate Jamie Eichmann (Cedarburg, Wisc.).
