Terp Senior Keith Unikel Captures Medalist Honors At Furman Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Maryland senior Keith Unikel (Potomac, Md.) won a single-hole playoff and defeated Virginia's James Driscoll to move from second-place to first, and win medalist honors Sunday at the Furman Intercollegiate in Greenville, S.C. Unikel, firing a four-under 68 for the second straight round, came from three shots behind Driscoll on the final 18 holes to tie, and then overtake the Atlantic Coast Conference foe on a playoff hole at the 6,800-yard Furman University Golf Course.
It was the Terps' first individual title of the year, and the first since 1999 senior Miguel Rivera won the same tournament in a similar playoff.
Unikel (73-68-68--209, -7) followed in Rivera's footsteps to win the first tournament of his career. The 1999 All-ACC selection led Maryland (881, +17) to its best finish of the season. Sophomore Corey Brigham (Rumson, N.J.) finished just out of the top 10, 11th, as the Terps trailed only champion Virginia (876, +12) and East Tennessee State (878, +14).
The Terps trailed the same schools after two rounds, each by three strokes. Maryland kept pace with East Tennessee State, but the Cavs stretch the lead by two strokes to claim the team championship.
Brigham (73-73-75--221, +5) dropped two places in the final 18 holes with a three-over par 75, after shooting a pair of 73's in each of his opening rounds. He was followed on the Maryland roster by freshman Dan MacDonald (Plandome, N.Y.) at +11 and senior Gary Mankulish (Laurel, Md.) at +12.
