
Richmond Beats Maryland Baseball Team 8-2

Freshman left fielder Vito Chiaravalloti had four hits and scored three runs, leading Richmond (22-24) to an 8-2 win over Maryland (20-29) in baseball action on Wednesday at Shipley Field. The game marked the second of a two-game series between the two schools.
Richmond jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Chiaravalloti scored on a sacrifice fly and senior designated hitter G.R. Shallick scored on a passed ball. The Terps, however, pulled to within 2-1 when junior first baseman Chuck Easter singled home a run in the bottom of the third inning. Junior left fielder Brian Patenaude then tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning with a RBI single.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Spiders exploded for five runs. Junior catcher John Nathans, freshman shortstop David Reaver and freshman third baseman Matt Craig each led the way with a RBI single. Chiaravalloti scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh inning, extending the lead to 8-2.
Junior shortstop Sean Lomas and junior third baseman Steve Oursler led the Terps with two hits each.
Sophomore righthander Bobby Basham (2-4) got the win while freshman righthander Jared Stuart (3-2) took the loss.
Maryland hosts NC State on Friday in the first of a three-game ACC series. Richmond hosts VCU on Friday at 2 p.m. in the first of a three-game CAA series.
