COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Added as part of the Atlantic Coast Conference preliminary television schedule for its 2000 football season, the Maryland at West Virginia game on Sept. 16 will be played at noon (ET) in front of a national television audience on ESPN2.
The Terrapins and Mountaineers will meet for the 21st consecutive season in a non-conference game at Mountaineer Field. WVU boasts an 18-17-2 all-time series advantage including an 11-9 mark during annual meetings since 1980. The Terps, however, stunned the Mountaineers last season by winning 33-0 in College Park.
The Maryland-West Virginia contest is the Terps' first of two games on ESPN or ESPN2 in the season's first month. Maryland opens its season at home against Temple on Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. before traveling to West Virginia. Middle Tennessee State visits Byrd Stadium in a final non-conference game on Sept. 23, just five days before the Terps open ACC action at home against defending national champ Florida State in an ESPN game on Thursday night, Sept. 28.
The Terps will do battle in two of the ACC's seven games scheduled for ESPN or ESPN2, as announced this week as part of the ACC's 15-game preliminary TV schedule. ABC has seven games involving ACC teams listed on its initial regular season schedule, including three prime time Saturday evening contests.
The games listed below have been selected prior to the season. The remainder of the television schedule will be selected as the season progresses with selections made 12 days prior to the game (ABC reserves the right to select two games with as few as six days prior to kickoff). ABC will televise an additional nine ACC games while ESPN and ESPN2 will carry an additional five ACC games. Jefferson Pilot Sports will broadcast ACC games on eight consecutive Saturdays on its syndicated package beginning Sept. 30. Additional non-conference road games may be aired on other conference television packages.
