COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Week two of the Maryland 2000 football fall camp begins Monday as the Terrapins gear for their season opener on Sept. 9 at Byrd Stadium vs. Temple. Head coach Ron Vanderlinden welcomed 27 freshmen and transfers to campus last week as Maryland began its fourth season under the former Colorado and Northwestern assistant coach. Vanderlinden addressed local and state media during the squad's annual media day on Thursday, Aug. 17, and the Terps' first full-squad practice took place the next morning.
Maryland, 5-6 in 1999 after a 5-2 start, welcomes the return of 15 starters with high hopes of qualifying for its first bowl appearance since 1990. The Terrapins have eight more days of fall camp two-a-day practices beginning on Monday, Aug. 21.
Maryland opens its season with three non-conference affairs. Following the Temple game, Maryland travels to West Virginia and hosts Middle Tennessee State. Just five days after the MTSU bout at Byrd Stadium, Maryland hosts defending national champ Florida State in a Thursday night game to be televised on ESPN on Sept. 28. The FSU game marks the opening game of Maryland's 48th season in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
