COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior tailback LaMont Jordan has completed his academic requirements and is eligible to compete for the University of Maryland football team.
"We are pleased LaMont has successfully finished all of his academic requirements and will be a part of our team this season," said head coach Ron Vanderlinden. "He is another step closer to earning his degree, which is important to all of us."
Said Jordan, "I had a number of academic obligations to complete. Now that those have been finished, I look forward to practice and our opening game against Temple on Sept. 9."
Jordan, who has gained 3,227 yards in three seasons, is the NCAA's active career rushing leader. The Terrapin senior rushed for a Maryland record 1,632 yards in 1999. He needs 1,376 yards this season to break the all-time rushing mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Fifth in the country in rushing overall last season, 10th in all-purpose yards and 11th in scoring, Jordan was the nation's leading ball-carrier through the last six weeks of his junior campaign with 1,101 yards. He finished the year with a school-record 306 yards in the season finale against Virginia which was the third-best figure in ACC history.
