College Park, Md. - The No. 10 Virginia Cavaliers and No. 15 St. John's Red Storm battled to a 1-1 tie on day two of the Maryland FILA Preseason Soccer Classic. In an evenly played match-up featuring two of the top teams in the nation, neither squad emerged the victor.
After a scoreless first half, Virginia was first on the board as junior midfielder Steve Totten ripped a direct kick into the back of the net. The Cavaliers were given the opportunity for the score after a St. John's foul in the 54th minute. Totten stepped up and cleared the Red Storm's defensive "wall" for the score.
Down by a goal, the Red Storm mounted an attack in the 81st minute. St. John's forward Anthony Theorides found some space in the box and rifled a shot off the right post. Making a play on the rebound, the senior leapt as the ball popped up and finished with a header, knotting the game at one.
For the Red Storm, senior keeper Jeffrey Stoklosa went the distance and made three saves. Cavalier keepers Kyle Singer and David Comfort split time in the net. Singer collected two saves.
The Red Storm officially opens its schedule on Sept. 1 against Duke at the UConn Soccer Classic. The Cavaliers begin their slate when they host the University of South Florida on Sept. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Virginia/Coca-Cola Classic.
