UMBC At Home, NC State On The Road Up Next For 2-2 Terps

College Park, Md. - Coming off a heartbreaking pair of losses during the Maryland/FILA Classic over the weekend, the Terrapin men's soccer team (2-2) will try and pick up a few wins this week when they host UMBC Wednesday, Sept. 13, and travel to NC State for their first ACC match of the year on Sunday, Sept. 17. The Terps host UMBC at 7:30 at Ludwig Field. Sunday's game at NC State will be played at Method Road.
Looking at the UMBC Retrievers
The University of Maryland-Baltimore County (3-1) enters its match-up with the Terps after losing to Loyola 2-1 in double overtime. Of the Retievers' first four games, three have gone into double overtime. UMBC owns a 2-1 record in games that exceed regulation. Guiliano Celenza leads UMBC with four goals and two points. Brian Rowland is the Retrievers' starting goalie. Rowland has 421 minutes under his belt through four games, and carries a 1.71 goals against average and a .691 save percentage.
The Maryland/UMBC Series
The Terrapins have dominated the series with UMBC and have an 11-1-2 advantage into Wednesday's game. The last meeting between the local schools came on Sept. 9, 1998 at Ludwig Field. Maryland defeated the Retrievers 6-1. Both Rob Birch (West Islip, Md.) and Beckett Hollenbach (Havertown, Md.) heading scored goals in that contest. Birch, Hollenbach, Nick Downing (Redmond, Wash.), Mike Shebuski (Bloomington, Minn.), and Tyler Pharr (Dallas, Texas) make up the current Terrapin players who have faced UMBC in their careers. Senior goalie Christian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.) also started in goal that game for the Terps and came away with the win.
Looking at the NC State Wolfpack- Maryland's First ACC Showdown
NC State has begun the season at 2-2 with ties against High Point (4-4) and Long Island (0-0). The Wolfpack has suffered losses against Elon (4-1) and Butler (3-2) and are still looking for their first win. They face Charleston Southern on Wednesday before welcoming the Terps to town on Saturday. Damon Butler leads the Wolfpack with two goals and an assist for five points. Nick Olivencia and Lee Baldwin each have four points for NC State. Mitchell Watson mans the cage for NC State, and holds a 2.36 goals against average.
The Maryland/NC State Series
The 54-game series between Maryland and NC State favors the Terps by almost a 2-1 margin, sitting at 34-19-4. Last year, the Terps downed the Wolfpack 2-0 at Ludwig Field. Taylor Twellman (1998-99) and current Terp Siba Mohammed (Tamale, Ghana) both scored goals. Beckett Hollenbach and A.J. Herrera (Albuquerque, N.M.) both added assists to Maryland's cause.
