College Park, Md.- Maryland head football coach Ron Vanderlinden held his weekly press conference today as the Terps prepare for Saturday's game against West Virginia.
Coach Vanderlinden on the Maryland defense against Temple:
"When you go into a game, as a coach you feel that if you win two of the three phases of a game, you have a good chance of winning the game. I felt like we did just that versus Temple and won two of the three phases. Defensively, we just kept playing hard every single series and we did not let the adversity the offense had affect us. I felt that for the most part we tackled very well. Temple taiback Tanardo Sharps is very fast, quick and elusive and we really kept him hemmed in pretty well."
Coach Vanderlinden on the punting game versus Temple:
"Our punt game really gave us great field position. Brooks Bernard got off to a great start and we saw glimpses of that a year ago. He really backed Temple up and gave us good field position most of the day."
Coach Vanderlinden on the Terrapin offense:
"We were our own worst enemy. We had five fumbles for all different reasons. Certainly, when you do that you put yourself in a bad position. I was proud of the fact that we kept battling and that we found a way to win the game."
Coach Vanderlinden on the quarterback situation:
"I anticipate Calvin McCall starting this week. Shaun Hill is listed as day-to-day but I feel somewhat encouraged that he will be able to play."
Coach Vanderlinden on Heisman Trophy candidate LaMont Jordan's performance versus Temple:
"I thought LaMont played well. Down the stretch we needed a critical first down and a really good back gets you that first down and that is exactly what LaMont did."
Coach Vanderlinden on this week's game at West Virginia:
"We have a very good football team in front of us in West Virginia. They really dominated Boston College's offense much like Temple did to Navy two weeks ago. We are going to have our hands full again. We have to make a lot of improvement if we are going to be competitive with West Virginia especially since the game is in Morgantown on the artificial turf. "
Coach Vanderlinden on the Mountaineer defense:
"West Virginia was different defensively. They were very aggressive and stunted a lot versus Boston College. They played very little man coverage and played mostly zone, which is very different from last season. A year ago they were much more of a man coverage team and a man pressure team."
Coach Vanderlinden on West Virginia's offense:
"Offensively I think West Virginia is very similar to last year. They want to run the ball and will run the ball effectively. Avon Cobourne is a good running back and he missed our game last year with an injury. I think they have two outstanding receivers in Khori Ivy and Antonio Brown. Both receivers have good speed and are athletic and have played a lot. Brad Lewis, the first-year starter at quarterback, is impressive throwing the deep ball and he seems to have a lot of poise."
