GameDay: What do you feel your role is this season?
Scooter Monroe: Right now, I'm just part of a great receiving corps - a group of guys who just want to work hard and be considered one of the top receiving corps in the nation. I think we're doing a good job working toward that right now. Hopefully, we'll be considered key contributors in taking Maryland to a bowl game this year.
GD: What kind of goals have you set for this season, both from a team standpoint and a personal standpoint?
SM: For myself, just being known as a good receiver that helped Maryland win this year. As a team, we have to go to a bowl game this season. Nothing is going to be good enough unless we go to a bowl game. That's our main focus this year. That's all we need to accomplish.
GD: Who is the toughest defensive back you've faced since you came to Maryland?
SM: The toughest guys I have to go against are the guys in practice. Lewis Sanders, last year, was just ridiculous. A guy on that level this year is Tony Okanlawon. In practice, when we go out there on one-on-one drills and you draw Tony, you really have your work cut out for you.
GD: Is there an NFL player after whom you pattern your game?
SM: I just like to take bits and pieces from everybody - Randy Moss, Keyshawn Johnson - and see what they do. I try to incorporate that into what I feel can already do.
GD: Can you talk about the differences between quarterbacks Shaun Hill and Calvin McCall from a receiver's standpoint?
SM: Honestly, there is no difference between the two in my eyes. I'm really very comfortable with both guys. It just depends which one of them is making plays, then that's the guy we want to go with.
GD: How would you describe your progress as a player since you came to Maryland?
SM: I made the switch from running back to receiver when I came here. It was a big-time learning experience and I struggled a little bit last year with the change. I feel I've worked with it a lot, and learned a lot more things. Coach James Franklin (wide receivers) has been great in teaching us. I think I've improved a lot just catching the ball, and that's the main thing.
GD: How would you characterize this year's offense?
SM: I feel like we're going to show our big-play ability a little more this season. We just need to have a little more of a quick-strike offense. I think we're going to be able to do that with our receiving corps, which is the best in a long time. LaMont (Jordan) is always capable of the big play, of course.
GD: What are your goals after you graduate? Would you like to pursue a pro career?
SM: If the NFL thing happens for me, that would be great, but you can't bank on that. There are so many great athletes, but obviously that's something that you would aspire to do.
