COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Week one of the 2000 college football season is complete and the Maryland Terrapins have drawn one additional vote in this week's ESPN/USA Today College Football Coaches Poll. And the Terrapins have yet to take the field.
Maryland, with a first week bye, took a final weekend off after fall camp and dons the pads on Monday in anticipation of its own 2000 opener, this Saturday, Sept. 9 against Temple. The Owls were a 17-6 winner over the weekend at Navy.
Last week, the Terps entered the voting for the first time in 2000 with six votes, just days after the announcement that senior tailback LaMont Jordan would be eligible for his final college season. On Sunday, the Terps drew seven early votes. For the Terps, early season poll votes are nice, but not altogether meaningful as Maryland hopes to bid for its bowl game since 1990.
Last season, Maryland drew votes in the ESPN/USA Today poll during seven consecutive weeks before losing its final four games. Maryland drew AP votes, as well, but still was on the outside of the bowl picture looking in at the end of the season.
Head coach Ron Vanderlinden guides the Terps through their preseason paces for a final time this week before kicking off with the Owls at 6 p.m. on Saturday,
Jordan needs just 91 rushing yards to break the school's all-time rushing mark. A 100-yard day for Jordan would mark his ninth-straight on the Byrd Stadium turf.
