COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland play-by-play man Johnny Holliday, one of the most recognizable radio personalities in the area, will take his broadcasting skills abroad next week as part of ABC Radio's coverage of the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Holliday, who begins his 22nd year behind the Terp microphone when Maryland opens its football season against Temple on Saturday, has covered every Summer and Winter Games since 1984. The Sydney Olympics now tops a resume that includes broadcasts from Sarajevo, Seoul, Barcelona, Albertville, Calgary, Los Angeles and Atlanta.
The "voice of the Terps" will anchor Olympic coverage during morning drive times in the United States for ABC radio's 300-plus affiliates, from the opening ceremonies until the closing festivities.
"I consider it an honor to represent the University of Maryland as part of ABC's broadcast team," said Holliday. "I will be following the Terps closely, and look forward to getting back in the broadcast booth upon my return."
John Wagner will join color analyst Jonathan Claiborne and sideline reporter Tim Strachan on the Maryland radio network while Holliday is in Australia. Wagner will handle play-by-play duties as the Terps meet West Virginia in Morgantown on Sept. 16, host Middle Tennessee on Sept. 23 and open their conference schedule against rival Florida State on Sept. 28 in College Park.
Holliday regularly delivers the sports report weekday mornings on three ABC networks. The Miami, Fla., native now resides in Maryland with his wife, Mary Claire. The couple has three daughters.
