COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior co-captain Jill Fisher (Huntington, N.Y.) won the all-around with a 38.975 as the Maryland Terrapins (2-3) defeated the Radford Highlanders 193.750-65.900. Radford, which is fighting to maintain gymnastics as a program, did not compete with the allowed six competitors in any event.
Fisher turned in strong performances on every event, earning first place on vault with a 9.800, second place on beam with a 9.775, and second place on floor with a 9.850. Tonight marked Fisher's second meet as an all-around competitor.
Maryland also received top performances from members of the junior class. Junior co-captain Gillian Cote (Fredericksburg, Va.) took first place on floor with a 9.875 en route to earning second place in the all-around with a 38.550. Junior Kit Johnson had her best meet so far this season, tying with Fisher for first place on vault with a 9.800 and winning beam with a 9.825. On the uneven bars, junior Lisa Mealey (Bensalem, Pa.) earned a 9.825 to win the event, followed by her twin sister Alyssa Mealey (Bensalem, Pa.) in second place with a 9.750.
The homecoming was a warm welcome for the Terrapins who had been struggling on the road, opening the season 1-3 after competing at Denver and Rhode Island. After tonight, Maryland is on the road again, taking on NC State, Towson and North Carolina Saturday, Feb. 3 at the sixth annual Governor's Cup. The meet will be held at Carmichael Auditorium in Chapel Hill, N.C., beginning at 1 p.m.
