Colonials Top Terp Gymnasts At Home

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior Lisa Mealey (Bensalem, Pa.) tied for first place in the all-around with George Washington's Darden Wilee, scoring a career-high 39.025, as the University of Maryland women's gymnastics team fell to the George Washington Colonials 192.275-194.550. Tonight's meet increases the Colonials lead in the all-time series between the schools 29-25.
Mealey's all-around score ties junior Gillian Cote (Fredericksburg, Va.) for the team season-high. She also earned a career-high 9.700 on vault, tying with sophomore Catherine Gardner (Chelmsford, Mass.) for fourth place on the event. Gardner's 9.700 was a career-high for her as well. On beam, Mealey took first place with a 9.800
Freshman Sarah Hoenig (Seaford, N.Y.) earned the second balance beam title of her rookie season with a 9.875, followed closely by senior Jill Fisher (Huntington, N.Y.) in second place with a 9.850. Also placing for the Terrapins was junior Kit Johnson (Virginia Beach, Va.), who scored a 9.775 to place third on vault. Junior Alyssa Mealey (Bensalem, Pa.) earned a season-high 9.775 on bars to place second. The Mealey twins both placed fourth on floor scoring 9.800s, a new season-high for Alyssa.
The Terrapins turned in strong performances despite the fact that both co-captains were injured going into tonight's meet. Fisher had a hyperextended elbow while Cote suffered from a sore patella. Both have been strong all-around competitors for Maryland this season.
In 11 days the Terps will face the Colonials again at the Charles E. Smith Center in Washington, D.C. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
