CLEMSON, S.C. -- The Maryland women's cross country team placed second with a team score of 63 and the men's team placed third with a score of 80 at Clemson Saturday. Both teams showed improvement since their last meet three weeks ago at Navy, where both teams finished fifth.
Life University placed first in the men's race with a score of 38, followed by host Clemson with a second-place score of 42. In the women's race, Maryland tailed first place South Carolina, who placed first with a score of 36. The Clemson women rounded out the top three places with a score of 75.
Junior Kristin Lubas (York, Pa.) led the women's team in the 5,000 meter race with a time of 19:48, finishing in eighth place. Seniors Monique Berry (Andover, Conn.) and Marjorie Bollinger (Timonium, Md.), and junior Kim Smith (Glastonbury, Conn.) were close behind Lubas, finishing in 11th, 12th and 13th place with times of 19:56, 20:06 and 20:09, respectively.
For the men, junior Mike Prada (Fulton, Md.) continues to be the top runner for the Terps, finishing in ninth place with a time of 26:14 in the 8,000 meter race. Saturday marks Prada's second consecutive race as Maryland's top runner. Sophomore Francis Ciganek (Chestertown, Md.) finished in 26:44 to place 15th.
Next on the Terrapins' schedule is the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University in Bensalem, Pa. The meet will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6 beginning at 9:30 a.m.
