Former Lax All-American Lamon To Be Inducted Into Anne Arundel County Sports Hall of Fame

Oct. 17, 2001

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Three former Maryland athletes will be enshrined in the Anne Arundel County Sports Hall of Fame this month.

Lacrosse star John Lamon, football standout Azizuddin Abdur-Ra'oof and baseball legend Bernie Walter will be inducted into the Hall on Wednesday, October 24 during ceremonies held at Michael's 8th Avenue in Glen Burnie.

Lamon, a 1979 Maryland graduate, was a two-time All-America as an attackman. The Severna Park native was named to the North-South Collegiate All-Star game as a senior and later was a member of the 1986 United States National team that captured the World Championship in Toronto.

Abdur-Ra'oof was a starting wide receiver at Maryland from 1984-87 under Bobby Ross. Ra'oof still ranks sixth or better on the school's all-time record book in four major categories: pass receptions (5th, 108), receiving yardage (3rd, 1,895), yards per catch (4th, 17.55) and receiving touchdowns (6th,10). He was a ninth round draft choice of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Walter is entering the Hall for his accomplishments as head baseball coach at Arundel High in Gambrills. He is the winningest baseball coach in Anne Arundel County history with a 484-131 record over 28 seasons (1973-present). He has led Arundel to a Maryland-record nine state championships along with 13 region titles and 16 county crowns. Walter, who led the United States Junior National team to a gold medal at the 1988 Junior World Championships, is a three-time national Coach of the Year. An outstanding player in his day, Walter was starting shortstop at Maryland from 1961-63 under Coach Elton "Jim" Jackson, serving as team captain his senior season.

Tickets to the Anne Arundel County Sports Hall of Fame cost $25 and can be obtained by calling Michael's at 410-768-7901.
