Maryland Women's Basketball Opens Season With 28-Point Rout

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Anesia Smith made her college debut look easy on Friday night as the Maryland freshman led all scorers with 17 points off the bench to spark the No. 23-ranked Terrapins to an 84-56 win over Coppin State in the season opener for both schools.

Smith, out of Hayfield High School in Alexandria, Va., shot 6-of-10 from the floor and was perfect on four foul attempts. Overall, Maryland (1-0) shot 51 percent from the floor and converted 28 of 38 free throw attempts. Maryland took a 12-1 run into the intermission to blow open a 32-27 lead, and led 44-28 at the intermission after Smith's two free throws with no time on the clock.

In the second half, Coppin State (0-1) never got closer than 11. After closing to 45-34 with 17:25 remaining, Smith and Maryland's veterans outscored the Eagles 12-3 to push the lead to 20, 57-37, with 12:23 to play.

For Coppin State, Shannon Muir scored 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting off the bench.

Redshirt sophomore Vicki Brick added 13 points for Maryland, and team highs with six rebounds and five assists in her first game back after a torn ligament forced her to miss the entire 2000-01 season. Senior center Rosita Melbourne added 10 points and five rebounds in the Terps' successful regular season opener.

Maryland takes a breather on Saturday before hosting Loyola (Md.) on Sunday at 5 p.m.
