Maryland head coach Chris Weller (Maryland '66) is entering her 27th season with the Terps. Her 492-272 record entering the Morgan State game is 9 wins away from her 500th career win. Weller has led the Terps to eight ACC titles, 17 national tournament appearances, and three Final Four appearances.
Warley Active Leader In Double-Doubles
Deedee Warley is the ACC's active leader career double-doubles. Still working toward her first this year, Warley has 12 for her career, including eight last season alone.
Warley Breaks 500 Rebound Mark
Senior Deedee Warley passed the 500 rebound mark on Nov. 23 against DePaul. The Fort Washington, Md. native has 526 career rebounds entering Saturday's game vs. Penn State, and should have no problem entering the career charts for rebounding at Maryland by the end of the year. The Terps' Angie Scott (1975-77) is 15th on the list with 568.
Hicks Returns to Maryland
Maryland's fourth-leading scorer Jessie Hicks (1990-93) has returned to Maryland, this time as an assistant coach. Hicks is currently a member of the WNBA's Orlando Miracle and brings years of international and domestic professional playing experience with her. Hicks name appears in the Maryland record book in numerous places, including at the top of the charts for field goal percentage (.588, 649-1,104), free throws made (303) and free throws attempted (500).
Celebrating and Continuing the Tradition...
The ACC women's basketball tournament is celebrating its 25th anniversary, and gives the Terps an excellent chance to look back and celebrate their rich tradition in women's basketball as well as look toward the future and their quest for a ninth ACC title overall. Maryland's eight titles are the most of any school. The Terps also have the distinction of being the first ACC championship team ever, capturing the 1978 title.
Last Year In Cole
This season will be the final season of women's basketball in Cole Field House. Cole's history has been marked with numerous milestones and memories along the way.
Among the memorable moments in Cole Field House history is the first televised women's basketball game ever when Maryland met Immaculata on Jan. 26, 1975. The ACC women's basketball regular season attendance record was set at Cole Field House in 1992 when No. 1 Maryland took on No. 2 Virginia and a sell-out crowd of 14,500 was in attendance. Additionally, four All-Americans have called Cole Field House home, Vicky Bullett (1986-89), Debbie Lytle (1980-83), Jasmina Perazic (1980-83) and Deanna Tate (1986-89).
Hello Comcast Center!
The Terps will have a new home next year when they move to the state-of-the-art Comcast Center in late summer of 2002. In addition to boosting capacity to 17,100 from the present Cole Field House capacity of 14,500, Maryland will gain additional space for the academic support unit, sports medicine department and strength training areas. A Maryland Walk of Fame will highlight the Terps' rich athletic tradition, while the new building will also house all the coaches' offices and athletic administration offices. The women's basketball team will enjoy new locker room facilities in the Comcast Center as well as an auxiliary gym. These and other amenities that Terps' athletes and fans alike will benefit from in the Comcast Center will make it the most sophisticated on-campus arena in the country when its opens for tip-off of next season.
