COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's lacrosse team looked strong in its lone exhibition game of the 2001 season as it handed the Japanese National Team a 22-5 defeat at Ludwig Field in College Park.
The Terrapins -- ranked No. 1 in the recent IWLCA preseason poll -- got on the board early and often against Japan, scoring six goals before the touring team found the back of the net once. By the half, the Terps had run up an insurmountable 15-3 advantage.
Maryland was led in scoring by senior All-American candidate Quinn Carney who scored two goals and dished out five assists for seven points. Returning first team All-Americans Jen Adams and Allison Comito each had six points as Adams scored two goals and had four assists while Comito found the net five times and added one assist. Comito scored on each of the five shots she took in the game.
In addition to the strong play of its seniors, Maryland got solid contributions from a group of players who will be counted on heavily this year. Junior Meredith Egan is one of those players as she is returning from a knee injury suffered last year. Egan had a goal and three assists against Japan. Freshman Kelly Coppedge is another key player this year who looked strong, adding two goals and an assist of her own.
Maryland will now focus on a pair of critical games to start their regular season. On Friday, the Terrapins will square off with No. 4 Duke at 7:00 p.m., making their first game of the season their first ACC game of the season as well. Their second conference game will come on Sunday as the Terps will take on No. 5 North Carolina at 1:00 p.m. Although it was later avenged in the ACC tournament, the Tar Heels handed Maryland its lone loss of the 2000 campaign in the second game of the season (at Chapel Hill). Both contests this weekend will take place at Ludwig Field.
