Maryland Men's Soccer Adds Two To Training Roster For Spring

COLLEGE Park, Md. - The Maryland men's soccer team announced two additions for their 2001 roster today, according to head coach Sasho Cirovski. Freshman Michael Dello-Russo (Columbia, Md.) and sophomore transfer Robert Sjolund (Borlange, Sweden) have both enrolled in classes, and are currently training with the team in anticipation of the 2001 season. Neither will compete in spring games, but both will train with the team throughout the semester.
Dello-Russo is a graduate of Wilde Lake High School in Columbia, Md., and was an All-Met first-team selection. The 5-8, 135 lbs. midfielder is also a former member of the Region I ODP program. Dello-Russo was a captain for the Soccer Club of Baltimore's Under-17 team. "Michael is a crafty midfielder who has a great mind for the game," said Cirovski. "I'm excited that he chose to begin his Maryland career early, as this will give him an entire spring of training with us. Because of this, his transition into the college game will be enhanced and his strength will vastly improve."
A sophomore transfer from Högskolon Dalarna, Sjolund starts his schooling at Maryland this spring after living in Sweden and playing for IK Brage. A standout on the youth team, the 6-0 165-pounder will play in either the midfield or at the forward position. A graduate of Forest High School (USA), Maryland will be Sjolund's first American college experience. "Robert is a very technical player, who plays very well in tight spaces. Very good combination player, and has a great mind for the game, " commented Cirovski on Sjolund. "He will add great depth to our attack, and will compete right away."
The Terrapins are coming off a 10-9 season where the team was wrought with injuries, which resulted in seven medical redshirts, many to prospective starters. Maryland narrowly missed the NCAA tournament and return 15 veterans to the 2001 roster. National signing day for men's soccer is Wednesday, Feb. 7, when the Terrapins will release those prospective student-athletes who have signed National Letters of Intent, and will help complete Maryland's 2001 roster.
