COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The top-ranked University of Maryland women's lacrosse team scored early and often despite unfavorable conditions today and beat in-state foe UMBC, 23-2, at the University of Maryland Turf Facility.
The game -- originally scheduled to take place at Ludwig Field but moved because of rain and poor field conditions -- was not only the second consecutive game in which the Terps have topped the 20-goal plateau, but also the second straight that nine Terrapins have found the back of the net in a game. Four other Maryland players had assists to make a total of 13 Terrapins in the scoring column.
Leading the way once again for Maryland (6-0, 3-0 ACC) was senior standout Jen Adams who scored a season-high six goals and added an assist. Freshman Kelly Coppedge added four goals and an assist making it seven goals and nine points in her last two games. In addition, senior Quinn Carney and sophomore Sonia Judd each had hat tricks in the Maryland win.
Notably, Adams was on pace to break her personal record for goals in a game (seven) when, with approximately 18 minutes remaining, she took a stick just above her right eye and was forced to leave the game for treatment. She did not return though her status for this weekend's game is not in question.
The Terrapins are now winners of 26-in-a-row dating back to last year. They return to action this Saturday as they will hit the road for the second time in 2001, travelling to Norfolk, Va., to take on the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs. The Monarchs were ranked 16th in the latest IWLCA poll and that game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
