DURHAM, N.C.- Duke sophomore RHP Kevin Thompson pitched his first complete game shutout of his career as Duke downed the Terps, 9-0, Saturday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field in Durham. Thompson (6-2) limited Maryland to just five hits and fanned six to record his sixth win of the season.
Duke would score the game's first run in the second inning when 2B Scott Grossi grounded out to second, scoring left fielder Brian Patrick, to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead. SS Kevin Kelly followed with a RBI single to right, scoring center fielder Doug Bechtold, to increase the Duke lead to 2-0.
In the third, the Blue Devils would add another run when David Mason hit into a double play to score Larry Broadway, to put the Blue Devils ahead 3-0.
The score would remain 3-0 until the seventh when the Blue Devils would strike again. Duke sent nine batters to the plate and scored three runs on four hits to build its lead to 6-0.
Duke would add another three runs in the eighth to close out the scoring.
Maryland starter Steve Schmoll (Rockville, Md.) tossed six innings and surrendered six runs on eight hits to fall to 1-4 on the year.
Junior CF Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md.) paced the Terrapins by going 1-for-3. The one hit also extended Swope's hitting streak to nine games.
Both schools will play the series finale tomorrow at 1 p.m.
