COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The women's tennis team (5-4, 0-0 ACC) netted its second consecutive victory at home Friday night as it defeated the Syracuse Orangewomen 6-1 at the College Park Tennis Center. The Terps swept the doubles matches and claimed five of the six singles matches to clinch the victory. Continuing to dominate in the No. 1 singles is sophomore Delila Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) who racked up her sixth singles win on the season. Causevic was an All-ACC selection in 2000.
Causevic teamed up with freshman Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) to earn a win at the No. 2 doubles. They defeated Masha Kabanova and Shervin Saedinia 8-2. Also netting doubles victories were freshman Olivia Dubovikov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior Pamela Floro (Manilla, Philippines) at No. 1 and senior Catherine Valantin (Metz, France) and freshman Chloe Chavardes (St. Nombreteche, France) at No. 3. Valantin and Chavardes have become a powerful doubles force with a perfect 4-0 record in dual competition.
In singles play, Causevic set the pace by defeating Michelle Neveklovska 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1. Dubovikov and Valantin each earned wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Floro earned her fourth dual victory and Marker claimed her third with wins over Syracuse. Competing for the first time this spring, after being sidelined by an injury, junior transfer Monica Villarreal (Big Spring, Tex.) dropped her match at the No. 6 singles to Syracuse's Zani Suttle. This was the only victory on the night for the Orangewomen.
The Terps are back in action on Sunday March 11 at 12:00 p.m. when they square off against No. 43 Minnesota. Matches will be played in the College Park Tennis Center.
