
Maryland Gymnasts Place Third At Regional Meet

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Junior co-captain Gillian Cote (Fredericksburg, Va.) and senior co-captain Jill Fisher (Huntington, N.Y) placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the all-around as the University of Maryland women's gymnastics team (19-10) earned a 195.850 to place third at the NCAA Southeast Regional meet Saturday. University of Georgia placed first with a score of 197.775, followed in second by host University of Florida with a 196.650.
Placing first and second, Georgia and Florida qualify to compete in the NCAA National Championship meet in Athens, Ga. on April 19-21. 2001. Cote and Fisher were the top two all-around competitors not on a nationals qualifying team, therefore they also qualify to compete at nationals as individual all-around competitors.
Cote's all-around score was 39.225, followed by Fisher's sixth place score of 39.125. Fisher also placed fourth on the floor exercise with a 9.900. On the uneven bars, junior Lisa Mealey (Bensalem, Pa.) placed eighth with a 9.850 before taking seventh in the all-around with a 39.125. Junior Kit Johnson (Virginia Beach, Va.) was the Terps' top competitor on both vault with a season-high 9.850 on vault and freshman Sarah Hoenig (Seaford, N.Y.) led Maryland on beam scoring a 9.850.
Maryland concludes the season in second place in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League.
