Buck Williams Among Seven Terp Greats To Be Inducted Into M Club 'Hall'

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland's "M Club" will enshrine six people - two posthumously - into the organization's Hall of Fame at the organization's 50th annual awards banquet this Friday at the Inn and Conference Center on the university campus.
Included in the 2001 induction class is former Terrapin basketball great Buck Williams, an All-American in 1981 who went on to play in the National Basketball Association for 18 seasons. Williams' fellow inductees include golfer Deane Beman ('60), track and field standout Nick Kovalakides ('61), soccer/baseball star Andy McDonald ('58), lacrosse/football player Sam Silber ('35), field hockey star Kim Turner ('88), and rifle standout Alice Orton ('30). Silber and Orton will be inducted posthumously.
The Athletic Hall of Fame, founded in 1982 by the M Club as a joint project with the department of intercollegiate athletics, recognizes Terrapin athletes who have contributed to the honor and fame of the university's sports program.
A look at this year's class of inductees:
Deane Beman (Golf - 1960)
* Won two U.S. Amateur titles in 1960 and 1963 and the British Amateur title in 1959
* Was a member of four Walker Cup teams, four World Amateur teams and three U.S. America's Cup squads
* Won five PGA Tour events during his six year professional career
* Managed unprecedented growth in the PGA Tour during his 20 years as commissioner from 1974-1994
* Elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2000 for the lifetime achievement category
Nick Kovalakides (Track & Field - 1961)
* Penn Relays and IC4A javelin champion
* Five-time ACC champion (javelin, shot put & discus)
* Silver medalist, Pan American Games
* Bronze medalist, USA vs. USSR Track & Field meet
* Silver medalist, Pan American Games
* Meet director, ACC Indoor Championships (1973-1984)
* International coach, World Games for the Deaf (1969, 1973, 1977)
* Head Maryland track coach, ACC indoor & outdoor champions (1969-1974)
* Director, Campus Recreation Services, and Campus Director of Visitor Services (1969-2000)
Andy McDonald (Soccer, Baseball - 1958)
* Three-time All-South and NCAA All-American in soccer (1955-57)
* Three-time ACC championship team member
* Soccer team's high scorer (1955) and team co-captain (1957)
* Four-time All-ACC in baseball, team captain in 1958
* Teacher, coach, professor, director of athletics at Essex Community College
Sam Silber (Lacrosse, Football - 1935), recently deceased
* Two-time All-American in lacrosse and also lettered in football
* Executive officer of fighter squadron in WWII and saw action in North Africa and the South Pacific
* Was a WWII ace with seven confirmed victories, awarded Legion of Merit, the Purple Heart, four Distinguished Flying Crosses, four Air Medals and the Presidential Unit Citation
* Chairman and charter member of the Maryland Athletic Hall of Fame
* Selection committee, member of Lacrosse Foundation Board and Aviation Board member of the Baltimore Chamber of Commerce
Kim Turner (Field Hockey - 1988)
* Youngest field hockey player (age 14) ever to advance to the "A" level of the Olympic Development Camp in Colorado Springs, Colo.
* Represented the North team at the National Sports Festival and scored a goal to help win the gold medal for the team
* On the national under-21 team in Canada and the Olympic Reserve team in Italy
* Four-time All-ACC, honorable mention and three-time first team All-American at Maryland
* Scored both goals in win over UNC in national championship game, broke all goals and assist records while at Maryland
* Turned to professional golf and participated on the Futures tour and the mini LPGA for two years
Buck Williams (Basketball - 1981)
* First-team All American in 1981
* First-team All-ACC Tournament in 1981, second team in 1980
* Career averages of 13.6 ppg, 10.4 rpg, school-record field goal percentage (61.5%)
* Drafted in first round (No. 3 overall selection), retired after 18 seasons after averaging 12.8 ppg and 10 rpg for his career
* Earned All-Pro honors three times, one of only seven players to record over 16,000 points and 13,000 rebounds
Alice Orton (Rifle - 1930), deceased
* Member of 1927 team that finished third in the nation with a 23-1 record
* Member of 1928 team that finished with a record of 15-0-2
* Member of 1929 team that finished second nationally with a 22-4-1 record
* Member of 1930 team that finished with a 20-6-3 record
* A national champion scoring 594 points out of a possible 600
* Was individual high scorer with a total of 3,435 points out of a possible 3,500
