COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
University of Maryland will hit the practice field for full-squad practices Nos. 8 and 9 Wednesday as the Terps continue preparations for the 2001 season opener Sept. 1 at Byrd Stadium vs. North Carolina.
Wednesday's schedule will see the Terps hitting the field at 8 a.m. - their earliest workout of camp -- and again at 5:15 p.m. Head coach Ralph Friedgen, whose squad has been forced to work out on the artificial surface the past three days because of wet weather, is hopeful of returning to the team's natural grass practice areas on Wednesday.
"I'd love to get back on the grass, because the artificial surface is hard on the legs," said Friedgen following Tuesday's late afternoon practice, which wrapped up around 6:30 p.m.
Friedgen's Tuesday Post-Practice Comments:
On No. 1 QB Shaun Hill:
"Shaun is playing well, a lot better than he did in the spring. He seems much more comfortable with what we're doing. He must have really worked hard this summer, because he's made a lot of strides compared to the spring."
On No. 2 QB Latrez Harrison:
"We have everything in the package for Latrez, and some of the stuff is new to him. He has to experience things before he gets better at them. Where I see Latrez improving is in his fundamentals and technique. [Offensive coordinator] Charlie Taaffe is working very hard with him to get his throwing motion right and to not overstride - the things that help make you become more accurate."
On the defensive line: "I really feel the defensive line has improved. They are all giving me what they've got. They all reported back in good shape, and they know what they're doing. [Defensive line coach] Dave Sollazzo is doing a helluva job with the group. I think William Shime and Scott Smith are both playing better, and I think [true freshman] Randy Starks will be a player for us."
