COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The University of Maryland football team returned to two-a-days on Monday, completing morning and evening practice sessions on the artificial turf field. The Terps are gearing up for their September 1 opener versus North Carolina at Byrd Stadium and the start of the Ralph Friedgen Era in College Park. Below are some of the recent happenings:
CHANGE IN PRACTICE SCHEDULE
The Terps have had a minor change in this week's practice schedule leading up to Thursday's scrimmage and Fan Day on Saturday. The updated schedule is as follows:
Tue -- 3:30 p.m. (no morning practice)
Wed -- 8:00 a.m. & 5:15 p.m.
Thu -- 4:30 p.m.
Fri -- 8 a.m., 5:15 p.m.
Sat -- 3:30 p.m. (Fan Day)
FROM COACH FRIEDGEN
On changing the practice schedule this week
"When I watched our practice this morning, we didn't have any legs. But we came out later today and I felt we had a little more life this afternoon. We need to start getting it back now, though, so (tomorrow's) walkthrough will be good from some learning aspects and hopefully it will also lighten the load on their legs a little bit."
On the play of surprising walk-on LB Andrew Henley
"Henley hadn't been practicing as well in the fall as he had in the spring and then he gets in the scrimmage (last week) and he makes some plays like he's been doing it all along. I think he is a factor at linebacker and he will definitely be a factor on special teams because he can run. I think this (Thursday's) scrimmage will be big for him. I am impressed with the kid...I just want to keep seeing him in game situations."
On what he saw in last Saturday's scrimmage after watching game film
"Well, you know, E.J. (Henderson) played well and our offensive line played better than what I had originally thought. On the defensive line, Charles Hill is really playing well and has stood out to me."
GRAND ENTRANCE
The Terrapins have announced what could become a new tradition on game day in College Park -- Terp Alley. Approximately two hours before every home game, the team will be let out of the bus at the circle on Field House Drive, between the football press box at Byrd and Ludwig Field. The Terps will be led down the drive and to the Gossett Team House by the Maryland Marching Band and cheerleaders. Fans are encouraged to line the street and cheer the team on en route to the locker room. It is a tradition that has caught on and become part of the game day lore at places like Ole Miss, where fans root the team on in "The Grove."
FAN DAY SLATED FOR THIS SATURDAY
Terrapin fans can meet and greet members of the 2001 Maryland football
team following Saturday's scrimmage, which gets underway at 3:30 p.m.
This year's Terrapin squad will be on hand to sign autographs, beginning
at approximately 5:45 p.m.
