COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland football team held a closed scrimmage Thursday at Byrd Stadium and the offense showed signs that it will be geared up for the September 1st opener versus North Carolina.
With the first-team offense in for over half of the 100-play scrimmage, senior quarterback Shaun Hill looked good as did sophomore receiver Jafar Williams and tailback Bruce Perry. Notable plays in the scrimmage included the following:
- a 31-yard strike over the middle from Hill to senior Daryl Whitmer.
- a beautifully thrown 20-yard fade from Hill to Williams in the corner of the endzone.
- a 31-yard scamper by Perry down the left sideline where he eluded two tackles before being taken down inside the 15-yard line.
- a 33-yard fumble return by CB Tony Okanlawon in which he dove past the pylon for the score.
FRIEDGEN'S POST-SCRIMMAGE COMMENTS:
Overall summary:
"I thought we got a lot done and accomplished what we set out to do. We covered about every situation that we could encounter: sudden change, overtime, two-minute, taking a safety. We ran about 100 plays, 60 with the first team offense and about 45 or 50 with the first team defense. I think we came out OK. We had some bumps and bruises, but that's to be expected. I thought overall it was a productive scrimmage."
On QB Shaun Hill:
"He had a good day, just a couple of mistakes. On one play he took a sack and it stopped a drive. Overall, I just see him getting better and better. When he's focusing, at this time in this offense, he's ahead of where I expected. I feel pretty good about Shaun."
On the wide receivers:
"Jafar [Williams] is starting to rise up. I think Scooter [Monroe], who has been sore all week, came back. And Mo [Shanks] has been making plays. I think we're getting better. Daryl Whitmer has been a solid guy all camp, but dropped one today on fourth down, which you can't do. But he also made a big play. I told the players afterwards that when they are making plays they're moving the ball pretty good. It's when we don't make plays and incur penalties that we stop."
On first team defense:
"I thought they have played better. I thought at times they didn't play with the intensity they have shown. They might have been sitting back trying to save themselves. They still come up and make plays. I thought our corners played pretty good. We're progressing. I'm anxious to see how we're going to be once we get our legs back."
On the running backs:
"Bruce Perry ran well. He's really starting to get hard-nosed, which I like. I thought Jason Crawford did some things that were impressive. He's just a young guy that's going to keep coming. And Marc Riley has been steady Eddie, he's got a good feel and doesn't make mistakes."
