Preseason is finally complete and the dawn of a new season and school year are upon us. Our last week of preseason has been filled with an assortment of activities. We defeated Richmond last Friday night 1-0, with another solid performance against a decent opponent. The game was a good tune-up to prepare us for our upcoming schedule because Richmond was a bigger and more aggressive team than Georgetown. A.J. Herrera supplied the lone goal off an assist from Michael Dello-Russo and Siba Mohammed and the Maryland defense once again earned a shutout, limiting Richmond to very few scoring chances.
The day after the game was spent at RFK stadium performing community service for DC United and the Foodbank. We collected cans of food for the local Foodbank, which distribute the food to the area's homeless. The day offered us a chance to give back to the community and especially for Chris "Iceman" Gormley, who befriending numerous young DC United fans who seemed to be attracted by his long hair and laid back attitude. After the community service, we stuck around to watch DC United beat the Columbus Crew 2-1.
The remainder of our week has been spent preparing for our first match of the season against UCLA. Our practices have been geared toward the tactical positioning of our team both offensively and defensively. In addition, we've spent a lot of time on our crossing and finishing. Many of the players have begun to get excited and nervous in preparation for our first day of school and first game. Players have been seeking outlets for relaxation, including sophomore Seth Stammler who was seen mixing it up at the freshman dance on LaPlata beach, Sumed Ibrahim who was found dancing to Christina Aguilera in his dorm room, and Wes Kirk who has made an impressive eight-day showing at Chipotle.
We depart on Thursday afternoon for the Virginia Coca-Cola Classic where we meet UCLA and Liberty. We hope that the next time we write it will be about two impressive victories. This is Beckett and Kevin signing out, and remember, "the difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra".
