COLLEGE PARK, Md.- - Maryland's Beckett Hollenbach (Havertown, Pa.), Philip Salyer (Dallas, Texas), and Abe Thompson (Fairfax Station, Va.) have all been named honorable mention All-Americans by College Soccer Online. The Terps' three picks were the most of any Atlantic Coast Conference school and were in the top five overall with Southern Methodist (5), Furman (4), Saint Louis (4) and Indiana, who also had three selections.
A defender, Hollenbach is the only senior for this year's Terrapin team and is serving his third year as team captain. A four-year starter on defense, he returns as the Terps' veteran in the back and has tallied three goals and 11 assists for his career. Last week, Hollenbach was also named a preseason third-team All-American by College Soccer News.
Fresh off his spring and summer with the U.S. Under-20 team, Salyer joins Hollenbach in the back to form the base of an incredibly tough defensive unit for the Terps. An incredibly versatile player for Maryalnd last year, Salyer moved into the midfield when the Terps were hit hard by injuries and scored four goals and added two assists. This season, with a healthy line-up Salyer should return to hit usual position in the back, where he received preseason honors.
Last year's leading scorer, Thompson finished the year with 13 goals and five assists. His 31-point season ranked 10th overall on Maryland's single-season charts and earned him second team All-South Atlantic Region honors. The preseason All-American nods for both Thompson and Salyer are the first of their careers.
Maryland opens its exhibition season at Georgetown on Aug. 19 at 1 p.m. and continues at home on Aug. 24 vs. Richmond at 7 p.m. The Terps begin the regular season on Aug. 31 at the Virginia/Coca-Cola Classic against UCLA at 5 p.m. In the second day of the tournament on Sept. 2, Maryland meets Liberty at noon. Maryland's home schedule opens with 2000 Final Four participant Creighton at the Maryland/FILA Classic on Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m. and continues against American on Sept. 9 at 2:30 p.m.
