College Park, Md. - Terrapin striker Abe Thompson (Fairfax, Va.) will miss the 2001 season with complications from a break suffered in January to the fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot. Thompson sustained the injury while training with the Under-20 national team in Florida and re-injured the bone while competing in the USYSA Regionals with his club team in the Niagara/Buffalo area over the summer.
Termed a non-union of the fifth metatarsal bone, Thompson is scheduled for a bone graft on Wednesday and will be out for three to four months. A preseason All-American, Thompson still has three years of eligibility remaining. Thompson led the Terrapins his freshman year with 13 goals and five assists for 31 points, the 10th-highest single season total in Maryland history.
Maryland, now 3-1, will play its next game on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. when they host Loyola at Ludwig Field.
