NO. 12 MARYLAND (3-1-0) vs. LOYOLA (2-1-1)WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2001 * 7:00 p.m.
LUDWIG FIELD (4,000/Grass), COLLEGE PARK, MD
No. 12 Maryland Resumes Action Against Loyola
* Maryland leads the Loyola series 21-6-6. Last year, Maryland defeated Loyola 1-0 on an Abe Thompson (Fairfax, Va.) penalty kick in the 72nd minute. The Terps are undefeated in the last eight contests vs. the Greyhounds and haven't allowed a Loyola goal since 1994 when the Terps earned the 3-1 win.
* The current Terps can claim an unblemished 3-0 record against the Greyhounds over the past three years. Maryland has outscored the Greyhounds 9-0 since 1998, including last year's 1-0 upset shutout of then-No. 21 Loyola at Ludwig Field.
* Last year against the Greyhounds: Abe Thompson converted the penalty kick at 76:15 to put the Terps on top 1-0 and give head coach Sasho Cirovski his 100th win at Maryland. For a complete game recap, check out page 3 of this release.
* Current Terps Against Loyola: The following Terps have scored one or more points in their careers against Loyola. Here's the list: Abe Thompson (1 game, 1g, 0a), Sumed Ibrahim (1 game, 1g, 1a), and Siba Mohammed (1 game, 1g, 1a).
Next Up: Duke in Durham First ACC Contest For Terps
* The Terps dominate the conference series with Duke 36-16-3, and have more victories against the Blue Devils than any other team in the history of the program. Maryland and Duke met twice last year, once at Ludwig Field where the Terps suffered a 2-0 loss and the second time in the ACC Tournament first round. Injury-depleted UM put up the fight of their lives but eventually fell short, losing to the Devils 2-1 in double overtime on a Donald MacIntosh goal at 111:57.
* Maryland is 27-17-3 overall in ACC openers. The last time the Terps met Duke for their ACC season opener was October 19, 1965. Maryland won 3-1 and went on to capture their fourth consecutive conference crown with a 4-0 record.
Sumed Scores Hat Trick
* Redshirt sophomore Sumed Ibrahim (Tamale, Ghana) became the second current Terp to score a hat trick when he netted three goals in Maryland's 5-1 victory over American in the Maryland/FILA Classic on Sept. 9. Abe Thompson is the only other Terrapin on the roster to score three goals in a game. Thompson did it against Monmouth last season in Maryland's 5-1 victory over the Hawks on Oct. 4. Sumed is also the Terps' leading scorer entering the Loyola game with three goals and three assists for nine points. That's already more than double the amount of points he posted during his freshman campaign two years ago when he finished the season with one goal and two assists.
Sumed at the Top of the ACC
In the wake of his three-goal performance, Sumed Ibrahim is at the top of the ACC in scoring. Sumed has nine points spread over four games, for a 2.25 ppg average, which is tops in the league. He is also tied for the lead in overall points with nine, and is second in the league in assists (3) and assists per game (0.75), and third in goals per game (0.75). Terp teammate A.J. Herrera is also among the top 10, hitting the charts tied for second in total goals with three and third in goals per game (0.75).
Palmer Tops in ACC Save Pct.
Terp keeper Noah Palmer (Williamsburg, Va.) earned his third win this season against American (9/9/01) and was sitting at the top of the ACC at the beginning of the week with a .818 save percentage, tied with William Hesmer from Wake Forest. Palmer is also second in the ACC with a 0.71 gaa. The freshman earned his first start against American, logging his first complete collegiate game.
Terps in South Atlantic Region Stats
Redshirt-sophomore Sumed Ibrahim is tied for third in scoring in the most recent South Atlantic statistics with nine points. The Ghana native is not the only Terps in the top five in the region, however. Freshman keeper Noah Palmer has also made a splash on the goalkeeping category, settling in at fourth with a 0.71 gaa.
National Honors for Sumed
After helping the Terps to a 5-1 win over American on Sept. 9 with his first career hat trick, Sumed Ibrahim earned a spot on Soccer America's Team of the Week. For his offensive feat, he also received all-tournament honors for the Maryland/FILA Classic.
UM Against Ranked Teams
The Terps meet seven ranked teams this season including ACC foes Clemson (No. 20 SA), North Carolina (No. 10 NSCAA), Virginia (No. 6 NSCAA), and Wake Forest (No. 24 NSCAA). Nonconference opponents Creighton (No. 14 NSCAA), South Carolina (No. 19 NSCAA) and UCLA (No. 22 NSCAA) are also ranked in the NSCAA and Soccer America polls this week. The Terp' are currently 1-1 against ranked teams this season.
