NO. 12 MARYLAND (3-2) vs. DUKE (3-2) SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2001 * 1:00 p.m. Koskinen Stadium (7,000/Grass), DURHAM, N.C.* The Terps dominate the conference series with Duke 36-16-3, and have more victories against the Blue Devils than any other opponent in the history of the program. Maryland and Duke met twice last year, once at Ludwig Field where the Terps suffered a 2-0 loss and the second time in the ACC Tournament first round. Injury-depleted UM put up the fight of its life but eventually fell short, losing to the Devils 2-1 in double overtime on a Donald MacIntosh goal at 111:57.
* Maryland is 27-17-3 overall in ACC openers. The last time the Terps met Duke for their ACC season opener was October 19, 1965. Maryland won 3-1 and went on to capture their fourth consecutive conference crown with a 4-0 record.
* Last year against the Duke: The Blue Devils held Maryland scoreless at Ludwig Field last year and picked up the 2-0 win off goals from Jordan Cila and Ali Curtis. In the ACC Tournament match-up, Demetrio Sanchez opened scoring, with Terp striker Abe Thompson netting the equalizer at the 76:57 mark. Both teams battled to a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation and through the first overtime period, before Donald MacIntosh scored the game-winner at 111:57.
* Current Terps Against Duke: Only Abe Thompson, who is redshirting this season because of complications from a broken foot, has scored a goal against Duke in their careers. Sophomore Bryan Vitagliano (Scottsdale, Ariz.) provided the assist with Terp alum Jason Sardis (1997-00) in last year's ACC Tournament.
Taking A look at the Blue Devils
* This season, the Blue Devils are 3-2 with wins over Massachusetts (3-0), Richmond (4-0), and Radford (2-0). The Devils' losses have come at the hands of Northeastern (1-0) and South Florida (2-1).
* John Rennie is entering his 22nd year at Duke and has a 324-113-28 record with the Blue Devils. The coaching veteran of the ACC, Rennie has been a head coach for 29 seasons overall.
* Despite the departure of 2000 MAC player of the year winner Ali Curtis, several key veterans return for the Blue Devils including 2001 leading scorer Jordan Cila. A 2000 second-team all-ACC selection, Cila has two goals and five assists for the 3-2 Devils. Noah Lewkowitz (3g, 1a) and Demetrio Sanchez (3g, 0a) are third and fourth.
* Junior Scott Maslin has earned all five starts in goal for the Devils, and has a 0.67 gaa.
Schedule Changes
* The University of Maryland has announced four changes to its men's soccer schedule due to conflicts and postponements, three of which are conference match-ups. All are home contests to be held at Ludwig Field. The first of four rescheduled games is the Wake Forest game. Previously scheduled for Sept. 29, the game has been moved to Sept. 30 at noon as part of a men's/women's doubleheader. The women's game vs. Loyola will begin at 2:30 p.m. The Holy Cross game, previously the Terps' final regular season home contest scheduled for Nov. 9, has been moved to Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. The Nov. 2 game against conference-rival Virginia has now been moved to Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. The final rescheduled game is the NC State game that was to be played on Sept. 16. That game will now be played at 1 p.m. on Nov. 11 and will be the Terps' final home game of the regular season.
V-Tag Returns To Lineup
* Terp fans saw a familiar face on the field again when sophomore Bryan Vitagliano checked into the Loyola game at the 34:17 mark. "V-Tag" to his Terp teammates has been struggling with a nagging injury most of the season, but finally saw his first action against Loyola and logged some significant time off the bench for Maryland. Vitagliano entered 2001 as the second highest returning scorer from 2000, scoring four goals and four assists last season.
