GREENSBORO, N.C. -
Two University of Maryland football players -- tailback Bruce Perry and strong safety Tony Jackson -- have earned ACC Player of the Week accolades for their performances in the Terps' 27-20 ACC victory at Wake Forest last weekend.
Here are this week's honorees:
Offensive Back - Bruce Perry, TB, Maryland
Bruce Perry, a sophomore tailback from Philadelphia, Pa., moved to the
top of the NCAA rushing charts this season with a 276-yard performance
against previously undefeated Wake Forest. The 5'9, 190 pounder rushed
for touchdowns of 80 and 50 yards, averaging 9.2 yards per carry. His
276 yards ranks second in program history for a single-game performance.
Perry also added 34 receiving yards for a total of 310 all-purpose
yards.
Offensive Lineman - Adam Metts, C, North Carolina
Adam Metts, the only senior on the North Carolina offensive line, took
advantage of his last chance to beat Florida State by grading out at 87%
and accumulating seven knockdown blocks in the Tar Heels' 41-9 drubbing
of the Seminoles. North Carolina gained 301 yards against No. 6 Florida
State, reaching its highest offensive output of the season.
Defensive Lineman - Julius Peppers, DE, North Carolina
Julius Peppers, a junior from Bailey, N.C., equaled his career high with
10 tackles, including four for loss and one sack as the Tar Heels
trounced No. 6 Florida State 41-9. Peppers added one interception for
13 return yards, and he paced the Tar Heel defense in yielding just 224
yards to the potent Seminole offense. In the second half, Peppers and
the North Carolina defense gave up just 34 yards in their rout.
Defensive Back - Tony Jackson, SS, Maryland
Tony Jackson had seven tackles, an interception, and a fumble recovery,
as Maryland defeated Wake Forest 27-20. The native of Ellicott City,
Md., picked off a Demon Deacon attempt in the end zone late in the
fourth quarter to preserve the victory for the Terrapins. Jackson was
also credited with breaking up two Wake Forest passes, as Maryland
became the first team this season to edge out the upstart Demon Deacons.
Specialist - James MacPherson, QB/P, Wake Forest
In just his second week as the starting punter, James MacPherson boomed
five punts for an average of 48.8 yards per kick against Maryland,
including a long punt of 56 yards. Better known as a quarterback, the
native of Tucson, Ariz., completed 16 of 29 passes for 214 yards and one
touchdown.
Rookie - Darian Durant, QB, North Carolina
Darian Durant, the redshirt freshman from Florence, S.C., went 9 of 16
for 115 yards and two touchdowns in North Carolina's 41-9 upset victory
over Florida State. Durant added two rushes for 10 yards before leaving
the game in the third quarter with a sprained ankle. With a 20-yard
touchdown pass in the first quarter, Durant set the pace for the Tar
Heels by giving them their first lead over Florida State since 1993.
