COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The student-athletes, coaches, and staff of the University of Maryland Athletics Department express heartfelt sympathy to our fellow Americans who have been touched by the recent national tragedy.
The department also expresses its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Colleen Patricia Marlatt and Erin Patricia Marlatt, sisters and University of Maryland students who were killed in the tornado that struck the campus late Monday afternoon.
The Athletics Department will pay tribute to these victims during the rescheduled home football game against West Virginia on Saturday, September 29th at 12:00 noon:
1. Paper American Flags will be handed out to fans as they enter Byrd Stadium.
2. Fans will be asked to join in a moment of silence to reflect on the victims of the terrorist attacks and the two University of Maryland students killed in Monday evening's tornado.
3. Fans will be asked to join two on-field vocalists in singing America the Beautiful and our National Anthem. Words to each song will be displayed on the Byrd Stadium video screen, while the words to America the Beautiful will also be printed on the reverse of the paper American Flag.
4. The Mighty Sound of Maryland Marching Band will present a patriotic halftime show, highlighted by a dramatic unfurling of the Stars and Stripes and a rousing rendition of God Bless America.
5. Throughout the game, as well as during Maryland's next home game vs. Virginia on Saturday, October 6th, fans may visit information tables for the September 11 Memorial Scholarship on the main concourse of Byrd Stadium. This fund was established at the urging of two Maryland students to provide assistance to University students, faculty, and staff who face financial challenges as a result of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.
6. In addition, Maryland joins all 117 Division I-A football programs in displaying an American Flag decal on the back of its helmets for the remainder of the 2001 season.
The two on-field vocalists who will lead Maryland fans in the singing of the National Anthem, America the Beautiful, and God Bless America, are Mr. Gran Wilson and Mr. Dominic Cossa. Mr. Wilson is the leading Tenor of the New York City Opera, while Mr. Cossa is the leading Baritone of the New York Metropolitan Opera and the Chair of the Voice Department at the University of Maryland.
