COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The No. 5 Maryland Terrapins started the season with a bang by winning the Virginia Classic Tournament this past weekend. The Terps finished the weekend 2-0 with a pair of 2-1 wins over No. 7 UCLA and Liberty, capturing the tournament championship.
Four Terrapins were named to the Virginia Classic all-tournament team, with sophomore Philip Salyer (Dallas, Texas) leading the group with Most Valuable Player honors. Salyer scored the Terps' golden goal to upset No. 7 UCLA and also turned in a stellar defensive effort over the two-game span.
Redshirt sophomore forward A.J. Herrera (Albuquerque, N.M.), senior defender Beckett Hollenbach (Havertown, Pa.), and redshirt sophomore midfielder Scott Buete (Bowie, Md.) all earned all-tournament honors for their performances over the weekend. Herrera scored two goals on the weekend, including the game winner against Liberty, while Buete scored one for Maryland to open the Liberty game. Hollenbach, the Terps' captain, was also a huge key on defense for Maryland on the opening weekend of the season.
Maryland opens its home schedule with 2000 College Cup finalist Creighton at the Maryland/FILA Classic on Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m. and continues against American on Sept. 9 at 2:30 p.m. The Terps' women's soccer team will follow at 5 p.m. Sunday against East Carolina, also on Ludwig Field.
