COLLEGE PARK, Md. - - Sophomore Philip Salyer (Dallas, Texas) has decided to forgo his final two years at the University of Maryland to pursue a career among the professional ranks. Salyer signed with Werder Bremen FC on Tuesday, Jan. 15, which is currently one of the top four teams in the German Bundesliga.
"We want to thank Philip for two great years of service here at Maryland. He's a quality player and an even better person. We will miss him," said head coach Sasho Cirovski. "We're on the verge of some great things over the next two years, and we're sorry Philip won't be here to be part of that. We think that experience would have helped Phillip's career in the pros."
Salyer ends his collegiate career after starting 40-straight games for the Terps' defense. Offensively, Salyer added six career goals and six assists for 18 points. This season, Salyer hit the game-winner in overtime to upset UCLA and become the Virginia Soccer Classic Most Valuable Player.
"I choose Maryland because I believed it was the best program in the country, and I still do. I feel the team will do really well next year. I wish them the best of luck and look forward to keeping up with everybody," said Salyer from Germany. "I have greatly enjoyed my experience here and feel I have grown tremendously over my past two years. It was a very difficult decision to leave, however I felt it was time for me to move on and pursue my dream."
