COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Maryland's football team has finished in the top 10 of a major national poll for the first time since 1984.
The Terps, who went 10-2 and won an ACC championship on their way to an appearance in the FedEx Orange Bowl, were listed No. 10 in the final USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Top 25. Maryland finished 11th in the final rankings released Thursday by the Associated Press.<>
It marks Maryland's highest season-ending ranking since 1984, when the Terps were No. 9 in the final coaches' poll (Maryland was 12th in the final AP poll that year). It also marks the seventh time in school history a Terp football team has finished a season in the top 10 of the national rankings.
Maryland was listed 10th in the final BCS rankings, released Dec. 9.
Said first-year head coach Ralph Friedgen: "I am very proud of the final ranking of our football team. It has always been my goal to be listed among the top 20 teams in the country. The fact we were able to do this in the very first year is truly a tremendous accomplishment, and depicts the effort and
enthusiasm of our staff, players, and entire organization."
