PROVIDENCE, RI - Major League Soccer and Nick Games and Sports (GAS) announced today that the June 22 bicycle kick goal by New England Revolution forward Taylor Twellman was voted as the fourth annual GAS Play of the Year. Nick viewers selected the winner from three finalists via online voting at www.nick.com/gas.
Twellman's goal against the Kansas City Wizards was also a finalist for the MLS Goal of the Year award, as the first-year player used his athleticism to acrobatically find the back of the net with a ball that bounced high into the air in front of the goal after teammate Brian Kamler had headed it off the post.
The other two finalists were also spectacular plays that required aerial wizardry. On August 17, D.C. United goalkeeper Nick Rimando was forced to make an elastic save on a shot by San Jose Earthquakes forward Landon Donovan in order to preserve a 2-2 tie. The left-footed blast by the World Cup star in the final minute of overtime was destined for the right-side netting before Rimando bounced across the face of the goal to parry it away.
On May 4, Dallas Burn forward Jason Kreis used perfect timing on a diving header to score the game-winning goal in a 2-1 road victory against the MetroStars. The goal helped Kreis become only the third player in MLS history to reach the 200-point plateau for his career.
The GAS Play of the Year award recognizes the most spectacular play during the MLS regular season, as determined by kids. Nick GAS and MLS selected the top three outstanding plays for young soccer fans to vote for online. The picks were made from the weekly features presented throughout the 2002 season as MLS teamed up with Nick GAS to present the "Play of the Week" which aired on the GAS network, in MLS stadiums, and on MLS regional television broadcasts. The six Pepsi MLS Dribble, Pass and Score(tm) national champions will present the award to Twellman at Saturday's Gala Award Ceremony at the Providence Performing Arts Center.
