Maryland Closes 'FallBall' Season With A Win & A Tie

Oct. 21, 2002

NORTHERN BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. - The Maryland men's lacrosse team finished its 2002 "Fall Ball" schedule with a win and a tie at the Genessee Valley Fall Tournament in Northern Baltimore last Saturday. The Terps downed Mount St. Mary's, 17-4, in the first game and came back in the fourth quarter to tie Princeton, 9-9.

"I thought we were athletic and competed hard," said coach Dave Cottle. "We played with confidence and I think we learning to execute our way out of trouble. We got a good test in the Princeton game, they are a senior-laden team and were the best team we have played this fall."

In the first game, the Terps easily defeated the Mountaineers, 17-4. The game marked the debut of graduate student Brian Hunt, who previously played at Yale, with the Terps and the return of Dan LaMonica, who had been sidelined for much of the fall. Both players came out strong as Hunt netted three goals and an assist. LaMonica scored twice and added an assist on Hunt's third goal of the game. Freshmen Bill McGlone and Brendan Healy scored twice as did senior Matt Urlock. J.R. Bordley added a goal and two assists. The Terps other goals came from Willy Passavia, Peter Ellis, Andrew Schwartzman, Jamie Daue and Michael Hartofilis. In goal, freshman Teddy Murphy made 11 saves.

Against Princeton, the defening national runner-up, the Terps fell behind early and trailed 6-2 at halftime. They cut the lead to 8-4 after three quarters and rallied for the tie, 9-9 in the fourth, as Princeton ran many of its reserves into the lineup. The Terps outscored Princeton 5-1 in that fourth quarter.

Freshman Joe Walters had a great game against Princeton, as he scored three goals and added two assists. LaMonica handed out three assists. Urlock scored three goals as well off assists from Mollot, LaMonica and Walters. Mike Mollot also scored off a pass from Walters. Willy Passavia converted a feed from Ian Healy. Brendan Healy added the last score in the fourth quarter.

In goal, Danny McCormick made seven saves.
