The Match Up Close: Point Break
The Maryland/Clemson game not only matches up two Top 10 opponents on the national scale, but also pits the ACC's top two offenses against each other. Neither defense is what most coaches would call shabby either, with Clemson and Maryland two of the three ACC teams holding opponents to less than one goal a game this season. Looking at the team's defensive stats, Clemson is second the ACC behind Wake Forest (0.54) with a 0.86 goals against average. The Terps are right behind the Tigers at a 0.93 goals against average.
These two teams can flex their offensive muscle, as well. Both have been in consistently among the top 10 teams in the country goals per game average. Clemson is No. 4 this week, averaging 3.17 goals per game, while the Terps are No. 9 with a 2.86 goals per game average.
All-Time Series vs. Clemson
The Clemson series is one of only two series ACC series in which the Terps do not hold the advantage. Maryland trails in its series with Clemson 11-27-1, and has lost eight out of the last 10 games it has played against the Tigers. The last Terrapin win was on Oct. 30, 1999, at Clemson when the Terps won 2-1 at Historic Riggs Field. Maryland dropped two games to the Tigers last year. The first loss was a regular season 2-0 defeat at Clemson, while the second was a 2-1 loss during the ACC tournament that Clemson hosted.
Current Terps vs. Clemson
Four current Terrapins have scored points against Clemson in their careers. In 1999, Siba Mohammed (Tamale, Ghana) had two assists in Maryland's 2-1 win at Clemson. Abe Thompson (Fairfax Station, Va.), scored a goal in the Terps' 3-2 loss at Ludwig Field in 2000, and Seth Stammler (Gahanna, Ohio) and Michael Dello-Russo (Columbia, Md.) connected for the Terps' lone goal during the 2001 ACC tournament game vs. Clemson last season.
